Isabella Ferguson (1819 - 1901) The Fergusons came to Canada from Craignish parish, Argyllshire, Scotland. The family came in three groups; the first arriving in Lanark County (Ontario) in 1821, the second arriving in 1841 via New York City and travelling 'overland' by the Hudson river and Erie Canal to Oswego and then by lake boats and walking to Middlesex County (Ontario), and the third arriving in about 1896 to join the family in Middlesex. Isabella (Ishbel), pictured here, worked as a servant in "Captain Campbell's Barbreck House,"  which is located at the top of  the Craignish peninsula near Ardfern, and is visible from the A816. Another group of Fergusons also came from Craignish parish to Mosa township in Middlesex County. It appears likely that they were related, but the connection has not been established.

NOTE: The exact relationship among the second generation has not been fully documented.  It is certain that they were related, but some birth records have not been found to establish them as siblings with complete certainty.  Genealogy research on the Ferguson family has been very difficult.  The names Duncan and Dougald appear in almost every branch of the family through several generations, and it was often difficult, if not impossible to determine which Duncan or Dougald belonged to which branch.  Also, some of the Fergusons left the Established Church of Scotland, became Baptists and therefore do not appear in the old Craignish parish records.
